STEM Education Programme

The Grangemouth Flood Protection Scheme (GFPS) STEM Education Programme, developed by consultants Jacobs in conjunction with Falkirk Council’s Children’s Services, aims to bridge the gap between school, higher education, and industry by helping to equip young people with the skills required to adapt and thrive in this fast-paced, ever-changing world.

Whilst we are no longer actively running this programme, the bank of FREE LEARNING RESOURCES are still available for schools to help inspire the next generation of original thinkers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. All resources can be downloaded using the links below.

Phase One

As part of Phase One of the programme, run in 2022 and 2023, local primary schools and youth groups (aged 10-12) were given the opportunity to learn more about the devastating effects of flooding and the wide variety of careers involved. The children then worked together in groups, each taking on a different role, to research flood protection solutions before selecting the best option and presenting to a panel of industry experts.

All resources required to deliver this programme can be accessed here.

Phase Two

As part of Phase Two of the programme, the free learning resources were developed for young people (aged 11-14). They have been designed to support the teaching and learning of STEM based subjects and skills in a project context and help cultivate future ambition.

The unique learning materials based on a locally relevant infrastructure project, were successfully used at a series of events including the 2023 and 2024 Falkirk Science Festivals.

These resources are suitable for use by subject specialists across the broad general education curriculum, Developing Young Workforce (DYW) coordinators or youth group leaders.

The Phase Two resources can be accessed here.
